Transformation plans of companies and facilities - the EMAS environmental management system as a basis

The new ISO 14001:2026 is here!

Approximately ten years after the last revision of ISO 14001, the new international version was published on April 15, 2026. The German version is now also available: DIN EN ISO 14001:2026 was published in June 2026.

While the basic structure of the standard has remained the same, ISO 14001:2026 mainly contains clarifications and minor additions to existing requirements that certified companies now have to deal with.

Important changes to ISO 14001:2026

1. Consideration of climate change and environmental conditions in the context analysis – In addition to the topic of climate change, which was already included in 2024 via a standard amendment, other environmental conditions such as biodiversity, resource availability and pollution levels must now also be given more intensive consideration in the context analysis.

2. Greater importance of assessing non-compliant conditions and potential emergency situations – The requirements for assessing compliant and non-compliant conditions have been specified and moved to the chapter on environmental aspects assessment, as has the assessment of potential emergency situations.

3. Stronger focus on life cycle and supply chains – The life cycle concept already included in the previous version is sharpened, and consideration of environmental aspects along the value chain is required.

4. Change Management as a Separate Chapter – The existing requirements for change management are summarized in a separate new chapter. This chapter contains requirements for the planning and control of changes that may have an impact on the EMS or environmental performance.

5. Extended Guidelines (Annex A) – Annex A, which is intended to assist organisations in interpreting and implementing the requirements in practice, has been significantly expanded and clarified in several places.

Transitional periods: What are the next steps?

A three-year transition period is granted for converting existing certifications to the new version of the standard. Certificates issued according to ISO 14001:2015 will therefore initially remain valid, depending on their issue date.
The 36-month deadline corresponds to a transition by April 30, 2029 at the latest, following the publication of the new ISO 14001.
