Support in the further development of their management system

Checklist: 6 tasks after the introduction of a management system

After certification comes implementation: A management system only delivers its benefits if it remains dynamic. This checklist will help you stay focused, especially in the first year after implementation. This ensures that your management system remains a genuine asset to your company, not just a paper tiger.

1. Define and break down the goals.

Are your environmental/energy goals clearly defined? Who is responsible for their implementation and how are they communicated internally? Tip: Use SMART criteria (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound) for each goal.

2. Actively pursue measures

What measures were documented in the audit report, workshops, or your management review? Are responsible parties named, and are there follow-up deadlines? Tip: Schedule 3–4 review points per year.

3. Update key performance indicators regularly

Is there a standardized reporting process for your environmental or energy performance indicators? Who is responsible for data collection, validation, and interpretation? Tip: A simple Excel review plan is often sufficient if responsibilities are clearly defined.

4. Further involve employees

How is the system communicated internally? Are there training sessions, feedback opportunities, or practical examples from the company? Tip: A 15-minute update in a team meeting is often more effective than a new manual chapter.

5. Review legal and regulatory requirements

Are there any changes to legal obligations, standards, or industry-specific regulations? Tip: Schedule a fixed review date every quarter or half-year, or use external information updates.

6. Prepare for internal audits and management reviews

Are the next audits and reviews scheduled? Is your documentation up to date? Tip: Link audit preparations with target reviews. This creates an integrated perspective.
