Since February 2025, the German Federal Environment Agency's new search engine, umwelt.info, has been operational. The platform serves as a central hub for data and information on environmental and nature conservation in Germany. It aggregates content from approximately 150 sources – primarily federal and state authorities – and is intended to integrate civil society initiatives in the future. Users can search for measurement data, press releases, information pages, and maps, among other things. The search results are thematically organized into the categories of air, water, soil, living organisms & habitats, and humans & the environment.
Particular emphasis is placed on the transparency and quality of the data. For each source, information is provided on its origin, license type, file format, and the possibility of automated download. Open licenses and machine-readable formats are intended to facilitate the reuse of the data.
You can submit your own data via email to umwelt.info@uba.de and it can then be integrated into the data system in cooperation with the editorial team.
The German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) is currently working on another environmental information project: The plan is to publish a list of emission factors modeled on the British DEFRA list. The German version will contain standardized, quality-assured, and continuously updated emission factors for creating a greenhouse gas (GHG) balance sheet and will be available free of charge by autumn 2025. Organizations wishing to participate in the testing and evaluation of the draft emission factor list can inquire at probas@uba.de . Further information can be found here.
