Since 2011, we have been making a Christmas donation through the Evangelical Lutheran Deanery of Munich to the pediatric oncology department of the National Cancer Institute on Lomonosov Street in Kyiv, Ukraine.
The institute specializes in treating children with severe cancer. However, due to the war, it has had to care for additional patients, especially since a clinic in the immediate vicinity was recently hit by bombs. These patients are admitted, treated, and, where possible, transferred to hospitals in partner countries to protect them from the immediate danger of war.
The renovation work of the last two years has progressed well – albeit with delays. Nevertheless, this work presents a further challenge for ongoing operations.
Due to the current circumstances, available resources are very limited and treatments have to be repeatedly suspended.
The Evangelical Lutheran Deanery of Munich supports the Cancer Institute with donations and, despite the war, regularly visits the institute in Kyiv. During these visits, members of the deanery meet with Dr. H.I. Klymnyuk, head of the research department of pediatric oncology, and S.W. Pavlyk, head of pediatric oncology at the National Cancer Institute of the Ministry of Health, to ensure that the donations are used correctly.
With our donation, which is being made available to the pediatric oncology department personally and very unbureaucratically via Mr. Klymnjuk, we would like to make a small contribution again this year to the care of sick and injured children in Kyiv.
