New standard for land use in the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG)

New standard in the Greenhouse Gas Protocol: Land Sector and Removals Standard

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol is considered the world's leading standard for corporate greenhouse gas accounting – and is currently undergoing a comprehensive revision. As part of a multi-year process, the entire set of standards is being fundamentally modernized, with completion currently planned for 2027.

The standard family was expanded in January 2026 with a key addition: the Land Sector and Removals (LSR) Standard . This standard will become mandatory from January 1, 2027, for all organizations that prepare their GHG balance sheet according to the GHG Protocol. Organizations with significant land-use activities or agriculturally based value chains will be required to systematically record and report emissions from land use, land-use changes, and biogenic emissions according to new methodological guidelines. Furthermore, the standard allows for the optional accounting of CO₂ removals related to land use.

Starting in summer 2026, we will offer free webinars on the practical implementation of the LSR standard. We will keep you informed about all further developments and practical updates.
