Frequently asked questions about quality management
What characterizes a good quality management system?
The decision to pursue ISO 9001 certification is often driven by customer requirements. To minimize the certification effort, a well-designed quality management system (QMS) is lean, unbureaucratic, and transparent. It is aligned with the risks to product or service quality and customer needs. It provides employees with the necessary data and information to achieve quality objectives and meet customer requirements. If records of quality assurance are required, the system helps to maintain these records pragmatically and in a readily accessible manner.
What needs to be documented in a QMS?
Quality management systems (QMS) are often too extensive and more of a hindrance than a help. Here, it's best to err on the side of less documentation: If there are significant risks in the process or if things have frequently gone wrong, then the process should be documented; otherwise, it's generally not necessary. The extent of the documentation can also depend on the level of expertise among employees. Conversely, it's sometimes worthwhile to document self-evident processes to retain individual knowledge within the company and facilitate the onboarding of new employees.
What are the advantages of a quality management system for companies?
Quality management helps companies not only in their day-to-day operations but also in their strategic direction. Clear guidelines help to avoid errors and waste – and thus reduce quality costs. Potential friction losses are eliminated through clear regulations. This leads to less stress and greater employee satisfaction. A quality management system (QMS) enables a more systematic analysis of the rapidly changing demands of customers and markets. This helps to ensure the company's competitiveness and long-term success.
