Multi-site challenge – Implementing EMAS / ISO 50001 in companies with many locations

The new Energy Efficiency Act requires companies with a total annual energy consumption exceeding 7,5 GWh to implement an energy or environmental management system by July 18, 2025. This poses a significant challenge, particularly for companies with multiple locations (multi-site organizations), as the management system must cover at least 90% of the company's energy consumption .

Arqum is one of Germany's leading providers of consulting services for the implementation of EMAS and ISO 50001. For 25 years, we have been advising organizations across all sectors on the implementation of EMAS and, since the publication of ISO 50001 in 2011, on the implementation of energy management systems. We have advised several hundred organizations in both areas.

We have also developed a customized implementation concept for so-called multi-site organizations, i.e., companies with many locations , and have successfully applied it on several occasions. We are currently implementing this concept at the German Federal Pension Insurance Fund, among others. Read more about this exciting project in our blog post.

The key element is, on the one hand, the clear alignment of the management system with the " head office ." Here, general topics such as context analysis, policy, responsibilities, qualification, documentation structure, key performance indicators, and management review are centrally regulated. On the other hand, the head office defines clear and uniform guidelines for the tasks to be implemented at the individual sites. These include, for example, the data to be collected, the regulation of environmentally relevant processes such as waste separation, and the execution of internal audits.

Another key to success is the early classification of locations into clusters with comparable environmental/energy-related issues, such as sales offices, logistics sites, or production facilities. For these clusters, specific topics like data collection or the organization of internal audits can then be addressed uniformly and therefore more efficiently. The level of detail in the regulations is determined by the environmental relevance or energy consumption of the locations, in order to minimize the effort required for less relevant sites. These structures are supported by the early appointment and training of the central team as well as cluster and site managers.

Furthermore, when advising Arqum clients, we utilize all the preliminary work we have already carried out together, e.g., within the framework of ÖKOPROFIT , the energy audit , or the carbon footprint assessment . This allows us to further minimize the effort involved.

Our approach provides multi-site organizations with a streamlined and feasible path to certification. Please contact us if you would like a quote for your multi-site organization.
