The German Federal Pension Insurance Fund (DRV Bund) is obligated under the Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG) to implement an organization-wide environmental and energy management system. To fulfill this obligation, the organization is preparing to introduce an environmental management system according to EMAS as part of the internal project "UWE – Environmental and Energy Management". An eight-member Arqum team is involved, supporting this process with its expertise.
The aim of the UWE project is to ideally prepare the DRV Bund, a very large organization with almost 25.000 employees and a large number of locations (including rehabilitation clinics and administrative buildings), for the implementation of EMAS .
In the UWE project, we are working together with the German Federal Pension Insurance Fund (Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund) and other project partners to address all aspects of the structural and organizational design of the environmental management system. This includes defining the necessary roles, distributing responsibilities and accountabilities, and allocating tasks between central and decentralized levels. The EMAS team at the German Federal Pension Insurance Fund is expected to be finalized by the beginning of 2025 and will then implement the system in operational practice.
Three DRV Bund locations already started implementing EMAS as pilot sites in 2022 and are nearing validation. For the further implementation of the environmental management system, we are leveraging the experience gained from the pilot projects and our tailored consulting approach for large companies with multiple locations (multi-site organizations).
It is already becoming clear that the German Pension Insurance Association (DRV Bund) has taken a very sensible step by starting its EMAS planning early. Successful implementation requires solid planning, sufficient internal and external resources, and ultimately, also...
an environmental consultant (commissioned in good time) to successfully achieve the goal.
