Companies with a validated environmental management system according to EMAS fulfill the energy law requirement under the German Energy Services Act (EDL-G) or the German Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG) to implement a management system. Our practical experience shows that energy is therefore increasingly becoming a key focus in validation processes.
In our video talk, Arqum Managing Director and active environmental auditor Dr. Uwe Götz informs you how you can meaningfully implement energy management principles within the framework of EMAS.

More informationFor companies that have to comply with energy regulations, energy is usually a key environmental aspect anyway. But even for companies that have defined "energy" as a key environmental aspect for other reasons, it is worthwhile – if only for economic reasons – to address the topic more intensively.
However, this does not mean that a complete energy management system must be established alongside EMAS. A systematic guide, ideally suited for delving deeper into the topic of "energy" within the framework of EMAS, is the tiered standard. By implementing different stages (1 to 4) in phases, you can decide how deeply you want to engage with energy management and which elements of an energy management system you wish to examine in more detail. These elements can then effectively complement the existing EMAS system.
Based on our experience, we generally recommend implementing stage 2, which includes:
- to determine the main energy consumers
- to submit a measurement concept
- to create meaningful energy performance indicators
- To define energy targets and measures to achieve them.
We would be happy to discuss with you which level is suitable for your company and what needs to be done to reach this level – based on your EMAS validation.
