The Karpfenwinkel shoreline area consists largely of reedbeds, providing a diverse habitat for a wide variety of animals and plants. Unfortunately, over the years a drainage ditch has formed beneath a boardwalk running through the area. Water that would normally flow slowly through the reeds collects in this ditch and quickly runs off into the lake. This is causing the reedbeds to become increasingly dry, and plant species are already establishing themselves that indicate progressive silting up.
On June 25, 2022, eight colleagues from Arqum and Terrabiota, equipped with wood, shovels, and sledgehammers, constructed water barriers at three locations under the footbridge. These barriers prevent the water from draining away or direct it back into the moorland, thus contributing to rewetting. To ensure this leads to a long-term improvement, the barriers are maintained twice a year by Arqum.
On June 25, 2023, several of our Munich employees, equipped with SUPs and shovels, paddled from the Südbad (South Bath) in Tutzing to the reed bog in Karpfenwinkel to inspect and, if necessary, repair the dams built with expert support from Terrabiota . The result: Our dams are in excellent condition and some are already covered with vegetation.
In 2024, we were on site again to check the situation: Fortunately, the high water level of the lake in July 2024 did not damage our expertly constructed dams! The dams are stable, the water is still, and no new drainage ditches have formed.
Our dams preserve the reedbed area in Karpfenwinkel, improve the bog's CO₂ sequestration capacity, and contribute to biodiversity. This is active climate protection! And team building can be this good!
