Since February 2023, we have been putting the concept for "climate management based on EMAS," developed by Arqum on behalf of the German Federal Environment Agency, into practical testing. Together with six companies selected by our client (the DIHK Services GmbH Climate Protection Business Network), we implemented key elements of climate management, building upon existing environmental management systems.
The aim was to test the applicability of the climate module and prepare for its widespread use by companies. Key topics included climate strategy, greenhouse gas (GHG) balance, and climate risks. Climate neutrality and transformation also played a role, as companies need to prepare and position themselves in these areas – not least due to mandatory sustainability reporting. Against this backdrop, an important objective was to structure climate management in such a way that it optimally supports upcoming legal requirements, such as mandatory sustainability reporting, and provides the required information.
Results of the pilot project “Climate management based on EMAS”
The pilot project allowed us to identify success factors, obstacles, and open questions. It demonstrated that implementing the module in business practice is possible regardless of company size or industry, and that the content can be effectively integrated into existing management structures.
This pilot project thus highlights the great potential of the concept of "climate management based on EMAS" and underlines its relevance for companies and for achieving climate protection goals.
The full project report will be available for download here shortly.
